Hockey. Underwater. A game like no other.
Underwater hockey, also known as Octopush, is a fast team sport played along the floor of a swimming pool.
How it works.
Two teams use short sticks to push a puck along the pool floor and into the opposing team’s goal. Six players per side are in the water at a time, with substitutes available. Passing, positioning and teamwork matter because play can switch direction quickly.
Players surface to breathe through their snorkels, then dive to rejoin the action. The game combines fitness, awareness and tactics.
What players use.
Mask & snorkel
A mask gives clear underwater vision and a snorkel lets players watch play from the surface.
Fins
Full-foot fins help players move through the water.
Stick & puck
A short black or white stick moves a heavy coated puck along the pool floor.
Protection
Players use a protective glove, a water polo cap with ear guards and a mouthguard.
Rules and safety.
The sport is non-contact in principle. Rules penalise physical interference, obstruction and dangerous play, with referees overseeing matches. Clubs welcome beginners and experienced players alike.
